toptentuesdayThis week’s Top Ten Tuesday challenges us to list…

Top Ten Books I’d Give To Readers Who Have Never Read Historical Fiction

I’m very slowly starting to read and appreciate historical fiction. I’ve never been one to love learning about history, much less read about it. But I have found a few authors and books that have convinced me it’s not as retched as I once thought. Since I’m still new to the genre and pick my books very carefully, I’ve only got six to recommend:

  1. The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory – a great book to start with if you’ve never read historical fiction. It’s got well-known characters (Anne and Mary Boleyn, Henry VIII, Katherine of Aragon, etc.) and the movie is also really fun to watch.
  2. The Constant Princess by Philippa Gregory – Reading The Other Boleyn Girl made me fascinated with poor Katherine of Aragon, so I wanted to read this Gregory book based on her life.
  3. Madame Tussaud by Michelle Moran – I’m not really into the French Revolution, but this is a fascinating story about the beginnings of the famous Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum.
  4. Alice I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin – A great story about the relationship between Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell, who was the inspiration for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
  5. 11/22/63 by Stephen King – Since I was born more than 20 years later, I have no emotional connection with President Kennedy or his assassination. But Stephen King’s historical fiction/time travel book is riveting and really makes you think about the events that took place more than 50 years ago.
  6. Beneath a Marble Sky by John Shors – This is a book that I never would have picked up if it weren’t for a friend of my mother’s insisting I take it. I was hesitant at first but this story of how the Emperor of Hindustan commissioned the building of the Taj Mahal for his late wife is both beautiful and disturbing.
